Klipsch AWR-650-SM Outdoor Speaker Review

By Stefan Review Source

There is a great feeling when you sit in the backyard, having a barbecue, or just chilling in the pool and listening to pleasant music in the background. There are many outdoor speakers to choose from, but not all will meet your expectation. Not all speakers are equally good or pretty.

Let’s face it; everyone wants the relaxation area to look attractive.

So, this where comes the Klipsch AWR 650 SM speaker, built to blend in the surrounding area. It doesn’t look like a giant box sitting in the yard but instead has an appearance of a rock. This way, it seems like a natural part of the landscape.

The Klipsch has more than six decades of audio experience and is specialists in a weatherized package, so rest assured that your expectations will not be ruined. For more than 60 years, this company has not compromised around the audio performance, and Klipsch AWR-650-SM is no exception. This speaker appeared somewhere in 2005 and until today remained as Klipsch’s flagship environmental rock speaker, designed for backyards. The company also offers a lifetime warranty on its outdoor speakers. If your unit has any problems, they may even replace it with a new speaker, which shows exceptional care for the customers.

Design

The speaker’s dimensions are 11 depth x 15 width x 17 height inches, while the weight is 13 lbs.

The Klipsch AWR 650 SM is one of the best outdoor speakers with a fantastic frequency response of 66 Hz to 20 kHz. The dB level is +/- 3.

The low-frequency extension is up to 43 Hz.

AWR 650 SM has a recommended amplifier power of 100W, 50W continuous, and 200W peak power handling ability. Impedance is 8 ohms, and sensitivity is 94 dB/W/m.

All this makes sure you will have excellent sound and guarantees enjoyment because 50 watts of power per unit is pretty loud for almost any outdoor enclosure. Especially with such a superb sensitivity rating. Most outdoor speakers have an 85-90 range, while Klipsch AWR 650 SM has 94. It might not look like that much, but you should know that a powered speaker with a 10 dB higher sensitivity rating is twice as loud as another speaker with the same continuous power.

Another thing is the aesthetics of the AWR 650 SM. Most outdoor speakers look bad or fake, and they don’t have the smooth style appearance of natural granite, red rock, or sandstone. The speaker’s fiberglass enclosure is UV and water-resistant and capable of withstanding all weather conditions.

The two-way design of the AWR 650 SM features 6.5-inch dual voice coil polymer woofer and two 0.75″ dome tweeters. The dual tweeter design allows the speaker to play both the right and the left stereo signal with great precision and clarity. Also, if you prefer, you can wire the speakers for mono output if you have several units to have smooth and even coverage to a larger area.

Do note; these speakers sell as singles, so if you want to have a pair, you have to buy two of them. You would probably want to run wire underground to the speakers, so you will need direct burial grade wire which is more expensive. But don’t save money on this because once you hook up the speakers, you would like them to keep going for years.

Sound

The Klipsch AWR 650 SM has fantastic sound quality. The speakers are loud, and probably you will need to play them at 50% to fill your yard with music without annoying the neighbors.

The dual tweeters enable the speaker to output mono or stereo signal, while the 6.5-inch dual voice coil woofer provides rich low-end response and full-bodied sound.

Verdict

You can’t go wrong with the Klipsch speakers, and if you pay for premium, you get fantastic speakers that will last for a very long time.

The only setback is that each speaker is sold individually, so it might be expensive to surround your backyard place. But if you are a music lover and can afford it, it is worth the investment.

So it is a strong recommendation for Klipsch AWR 650 SM, and it is undoubtedly worth consideration when deciding about installing outdoor music equipment. Of course, there are cheaper and more budget-friendly outdoor speaker options, but don’t expect the same audio quality.
